ERQUENCHO

Wind instrument in northwest Argentina and Bolivia, is a Caller powerful sound, with built-mast or cow horn and the mouth is a small vibrating reed, size is 30cm long. The sound is similar to a cry of an animal.

ERQUENCHO - Click to see enlarged image. This ritual wind instrument is similar to a clarinet rustic elementary, without holes to plug, is the family Erque (which has a length of bamboo 3 metres). Some research and studies have not determined their origin but can be attributed to the pre-Columbian era archaeological.

It highlights the cow horn which is the main aspect of the pavilion acoustics of the instrument as well as the vibrant tongue (piece of bamboo, about 10 centimeters and 10 mm of diameter, obtained by means of a longitudinal incision), inserted in the small part of cow horn.

The music provides erquencho is like a quejido an animal, unique sound and impressive, sometimes accompanied by rhythmic beating of drums.

The Erquencho can be found in aboriginal cultures of central and northern Argentina and in Bolivia, Chile and Peru. It is used for various rituals and celebrations, it is considered an instrument of summer.
